Apparently, I’m an Expert Now!
I was delighted to be invited to write a piece for the Irish publishing website writing.ie about how I approach satire.
It’s about where the ideas come from and why I’m forever asking “What if?”, and why the funniest material is often sitting right in front of us — in queues, overheard conversations, bureaucracy, stubborn opinions and all the strange little contradictions of everyday life.
I also talk about why satire works best, for me at least, when there’s something serious hiding underneath the ridiculous — whether that involves people queuing for no apparent reason, artificial intelligence giving up on humanity, or chickens deciding they could probably run the country better than we do.
And yes, I somehow managed to turn seeing a large chicken shed from a train into a writing technique.
